Sunday, April 8, marked a special moment in Sherwood Forest’s 80+ year history – breaking ground on the construction for our camp’s renovation and expansion. Thanks to our first ever capital campaign, Way More Than Camp, we have officially begun construction that will allow more kids to attend camp through improved facilities.
“We know that Sherwood Forest helps our campers become strong and capable individuals who develop a ’can do’ attitude to new challenges, take healthy risks, and build lifelong friendships,” says Campaign Co-Chair, Robert Holmes. “Thanks to an investment from the community in the future of Sherwood, we are able make space for more children to engage in Sherwood’s programming every summer.”
Way More Than Camp will achieve two key goals for Sherwood Forest – increasing the number of children we serve each year and building long-term sustainability.
New construction projects include building a new dining hall and kitchen, an Outdoor Learning Center, and a new village and much needed updates will be made to our current structures such as the Health Lodge, Barn, and other program spaces.
The Groundbreaking Ceremony took place at our campsite in Lesterville, Missouri and was attended by a diverse group of donors, volunteers, staff, and campers. Guests heard from speakers, celebrated the formal groundbreaking, and toured camp.
“I felt such a great feeling of pride and accomplishment to be a part of an organization that has the ability to change the world through the betterment of our children’s lives,” said Megan Waite, one of the Sherwood Forest Board Members present for the Groundbreaking Ceremony. “From the heartfelt words of our speakers to the celebratory chatter from the crowd, it was a moment in time that I won’t forget and the next step toward our ultimate goal – transforming the lives of children in need through powerful programs that allow them to discover their self-worth, realize their potential, and become productive citizens.”
Construction will be completed in time for full use during the summer of 2019. By the year 2020, Sherwood Forest will reach our goal of serving over 400 children annually in our Quest program, allowing every child who begins our program to graduate from the Leadership Training Program as a ninth grader.
When we started this campaign, we set a goal of raising $6.2 Million dollars. Because of the work of the Capital Campaign Cabinet and the generosity of our donors, we have not only met, but exceeded our original goal and have raised more than $6.3 Million. We’ve decided to build upon this success and raise an additional $900,000 to go the extra mile and ensure that more low-income youth can attend Sherwood Forest. This will provide the finishing touches our boys and girls deserve –world-class camp facilities that rival those at any great camp across the country. Our facilities and programs will be strengthened even more if, together, we build on our success and press upward to reach this “stretch goal” by August 31.
We are thankful to everyone who has made a gift to Way More Than Camp – it is because of you that we were able to break ground on this project that will give more children the opportunity to discover the best in themselves so they can grow up to do good in the world.
